Marble Slab Creamery

We had the most amazing ice cream in Victoria, B.C. when we visited the capital city of British Columbia for the first time on Valentine's Day weekend this year.

We were on an ice cream whim and passed by the Marble Slab Creamery at the mall. It looked exciting so we went in. We were rather confused by how it all worked at first.

Basically, they have dozens of little bits of candy ranging from gummies to Ferrero Rochers, as well as chocolate bits and Oreo cookies. You pick an ice cream flavour and pick how ever many "mixins" (read: mix-ins", you mix them INTO the ice cream, geddit?) you like. They will mix the candy bits into the ice cream on a marble stone slab and you can get your ice cream in a cup, cone or waffle bowl.

Sounds simple enough? They also had pre-set combos to make life a little easier for those fickle minds, like ours. It took us about 15 minutes to decide on a combo. We decided to choose cookies and cream, but they RAN OUT of cookies!

The ice cream guy recommended Nestle chocolate bits, which we agreed. You can't go wrong with chocolate, can you? We also chose a waffle cone because it looked like fun!

The ice cream was gooey and cold (that's quite an obvious statement but just wait). It was plain old vanilla ice cream but it was definitely the best ice cream I've ever had! Tasted just like high-quality gelato and the chocolate chunks were also heavenly! Very satisfied with the taste even though it cost a small fortune.

The ice cream guy had mixed it very well, plus he was very friendly. I was busy snapping pictures and he even offered to pose while mixing! Pity I was embarrassed and didn't want to impose on him. But it was the best ice cream experience I've ever had!

A couple weeks ago, we managed to take the wrong direction of the bus and ended up on the other end of Davie, close to English Bay. We remembered there was a gelato shop there and thought of going on another ice cream whim. To my surprise, it became a Marble Slab franchise instead of the gelato shop!

I was excited because I remembered the last time we were at Marble Slab. We went in and the layout was very unique even though it had the same decorations and items.

This time, we chose white chocolate ice cream with Nestle chocolate bits and fresh strawberries. Doesn't sound like much deviation but we were still fickle (okay, maybe just me).

The ice cream girl was literally stick-thin. She proceeded to mix in the large chunks of strawberries before I stopped her and requested her to cut them smaller. She mixed it slowly and gingerly, and piled the product into a cup since we decided not to get a cone this time.

You can already see what's wrong with this cup of ice cream. It was NOT solid; it was melting at an extremely fast rate and I tasted more liquid than the gooey texture like last time. The white chocolate ice cream was not very spectacular and tasted just like normal vanilla ice cream.

The thin girl did a poor job of mixing because the mixins were not very well blended into the ice cream. The ice cream was melting so fast that means she took her time to mix the ice cream for us. I was disappointed by the state of the ice cream.

Lesson learnt: If you want fabulous ice cream with your favourite snacks/candies mixed into them, Marble Slab Creamery is the place to go! Make sure you look for a strong muscular male when ordering your ice cream -- it will improve your chances of getting a well-mixed cup of ice cream. Sorry to be sexist here, but we all know who has the muscles around here.

Marble Slab Creamery is located at various branches all over Canada.
